Volunteer

About

Berkeley Animal Care Services has an amazing volunteer program, where you’ll get the opportunity to hang out with the dogs, cats, and other animals in the care of the shelter. Volunteering can entail all sorts of adorable things, from cuddling animals in their kennels to taking them on a walk outside. There are no set schedules or shifts and you do not have to come the same time each week. We really need more volunteers - especially those who can consistently come on weekdays. If that’s you, please sign up!

What to Expect

New volunteers attend 6-8 hours of training spread over a few weeks, with new classes starting twice each month.  Once training is completed, you may volunteer your time during any of our business hours, seven days a week.  There are no set schedules or shifts and you do not have to come the same time each week. We ask new volunteers to commit to a minimum of 1 hour per week for 6 months once training is completed.

Youth aged 14-15 are more than welcome to volunteer, provided they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. The parent or guardian must also attend all trainings. Youth aged 16-17 can volunteer independently with their parent or guardian's consent.

Types of Volunteers

Dog Volunteer - Our dogs are always grateful for a walk or a game of ball! But that’s not all! As a Dog Volunteer, you will provide exercise, socialization, and enrichment. Teaching appropriate leash manners and playing puzzle games are just a few ways to help promote good behavior, making them more adoptable.

Cat Volunteer - Petting and playing with our cats greatly relieves the stress and confusion of shelter life.  A scared or shy cat will often blossom with a little attention.  As a Cat Volunteer, you will have the opportunity to offer your care and affection to our adoptable cats and kittens.

Ambassador – Upbeat personality with a welcoming demeanor? As an Ambassador, you will be the first point of contact for the public at BACS. Assisting citizens in the lobby and directing visitors to the appropriate staff members are just a few examples of what to expect.
